Just Passing Through, 2009

This installation, commissioned by Eastleigh Borough Council in 2009, incorporates kilnformed glass discs, light and sound into a corridor which links the Swan Shopping Centre in Eastleigh, Hampshire with the Leisure Complex next door. The artwork alters the atmosphere of the space by triggering sounds that relate to the glass on the wall, each of which change in colour and/or rhythm as you move along the corridor, transitioning from the hectic, stressful, harsh shopping environment to a calmer, soothing leisure space.

The project integrated colour, sound and form from artworks developed in workshops with the local communities, including visual references to braille which were developed in collaboration with a group of visually impaired participants. The form and content of the installation was developed from conversations with people in Eastleigh of all ages on what they like to do in their leisure time.
